SURVEY when purchased in 2008
ALL SURVEYOR'S RECOMMENDATIONS IMPLEMENTED 2008.
IMPROVEMENTS AND UPGRADES 2009-2010: Preparation for Baja Haha and Circumnavigation
2009: All mechanical and electrical
systems upgraded, including new C-80 chartplotter, stainless Garhauer pole with
GPS and AIS antennae, Raymarine RADAR integrated with C-80, engine gone over in
detail with Yanmar mechanic plus spares laid in. I installed the dodger after
having it re-sewn. All rod rigging was checked by Kim Desenberg (yard manager at
KKMI, now new yard manager for Bay Marine) and he also installed the fixed
topping lift needed for the new Dutchhman system I installed to make reefing and
stacking of mainsail easier. Earl Mathiesen upgraded AC system with new panel
and ability to handle multiple voltage inputs I'll have to deal with worldwide,
installed the AGM batteries (one reserved for starting Yanmar), new electrical
panels, Xantac smart charger, and he also upgraded my propane system with
straight run and electronic shut-off. Kame Richards of Pineapple sails told me
how to use the new triradial spinnaker that came with the boat as a gennaker, so
I bought ATN tacker and snuffer. Had Sal completely recondition my good old
hypalon Aven Redcrest inflatable.
2010: Added 85 Watt solar panel to stainless pole and unplugged from dock
to minimize electrical corrosion. Ordered light-colored bimini, which will be
installed later this month. Found, bought, and installed manual Anchorman
windless. Bought Rocna 33 lb anchor and HT chain as main anchor (have authentic
Bruce and Danforth with chain and rode). Will install pedastal-mounted teak
cockpit table. Bought excellent good old Evinrude 4 hp Lightwin outboard for
Redcrest from Chuck Hawley of West Marine (had been in his family for 30 years).
May also buy used Iridium 9505a Sat phone from him. Made maps of all storage and
basic boat information on four double-sided sheets and had them laminated. Got
iPhone 3Gs and load all kinds of nautical aps including Navionics charts of my
entire world route. Subscribed to Moving Weather--excellent British weather
source to compliment what I now get from saildocs Airmail and Sirius. Bought
Standard Horizon AIS radio. Helped Earl install new Raymarine X-5 autopilot
which has parts all compatable with my existing, but old and less adequate,
ST4000--which I'm keeping for spares. I'm relying on autoplilot rather than an
expensive ($3-$5K) windvane because with the solar panel, the very small draw
from the autopilot will be no problem 24/7, and windvanes don't work very well
in light air downwind--and I'll be doing "milk runs" for a long time. We'll see
how it works out. Also got a deal on a storm jib which I took down to Pineapple
sails and they fixed a leech grommet (no charge--the rest of the sail was
excellent). I plan to haul out to Svendsen's when I get the money together and
do bottom paint and add a removable solent stay for storm sail and 150 Mylar
Genoa that came practically unused with the boat. It can also serve as an
emergency stay. Earl will help me install the AIS radio and a Raymarine depth
transducer (no hole in boat) that can tell me what kind of bottom I have for the
anchor. Probably later in May.
